A " First Day Cover" (FDC) usually consists of an envelope, a postage stamp and a post mark with the date of the stamp's first day of issue thereon. Technically, however, a first day of issue cover or first day cover (FDC) is a postage stamp on a cover, postal card or stamped envelope franked on the first day of issue and authorised for use within the country or sometimes issue made from a temporary or permanent foreign or overseas office.
There are two types of FDCs. The first and most desirable amongst the collectors is a cover sent through the mail in the course of everyday usage, without the intention of the envelope and stamp ever being retrieved and collected. The second type of FD is referred to as " philatelic", that is, an envelope and stamp sent by someone with the intention of retrieving and collecting it later. The envelope used often bears a printed design of its own corresponding with the stamp's subject and is printed in advance of the first day of issue date. Covers sent without any secondary purpose are often much more challenging to find and collect.
